The only way....

to keep your children from bringing head lice home from school is to NOT send them school period!! This is our first and hopefully last time the kids bring headlice home from school.
Let me tell you what a nightmare it is. First, after the scratching and complaining that your head itches, you look through their hair and find these nasty little bugs crawling around in there. Then after the shock wears off you go to the store to buy the damn cream rinse. $15.00 for 2 4 oz. bottles and we had to buy 2 boxes. Could you imagine if our whole family got headlice? It would cost us a fortune!
So, I washed their hair and then put this cream rinse in their hair and wait 10 minutes so all the nasty bugs can be killed. Then you rinse out the hair and divide the hair into 4 sections.

Next you pull up a 1-2 inch section and comb it with the fine tooth comb you find inside the box. After you finish the first section braid it to keep that part from getting reinfested and go on to the next section. You do this till you have gone through all of the sections.

Now, I should have said this at the beginning of the post but better late than never. DO NOT BUY THE NO NAME BRAND SHAMPOO, Just trust me on this one. It tangles the hair and the combs that come with it pull the hair out and your kids will scream and fight you. It's also a waste of time and money because it just doesn't work!
Now, when you're done you get their hair cut because you know they will come back and it will be easier to comb the nits out when the hair is shorter.

After all this you have to vacum everything and wash all the clothes and bed linens from the past 3 days in hot water and dry on the hottest setting your dryer will do so all the bugs and eggs will die. One louse can lay over 100 eggs at a time! I could not believe this when I first heard it but after combing out over 1000 eggs I am a believer! You also have to spray the mattresses with the lice killing spray. You also have to vacum and spray the furniture and the interior of your car. Bag up their stuffed animals and anything that is dryclean only for a whole month and then, after that, take them outside and shake them out vigorously.
Before your kids bring this nasty stuff home make sure you talk to them about sharing hair clippies and brushes, and hats, etc etc etc with the kids in their class. Make sure that is a huge no no. Better yet, send a bag with them so they can put their coats and backpacks in them so that when they hang their stuff up on the wall, it won't touch the other kids' stuff.
If you are the kind of parent who can homeschool (I am not) I highly recommend it! Otherwise, just cross your fingers and hope for the best! Use Melaleuca shampoo in the meantime and just maybe your kids will be lucky!.

What a nightmare! I have vivid memories of dealing with lice on many occasions as a kid. It was horrible for me, I can only imagine the pain in the ass as a parent!
